BTTS by Asian Handicap Line: What the Handicap Says About Both Scoring
Across 67,047 matches, the Asian handicap line says more about Both Teams To Score than most bettors assume. The story sits almost entirely with the side nobody expects to score.

I price BTTS by asking one question first: can the weaker side get a goal? The Asian handicap line is the market's own answer to how lopsided a match is. So I tested it across 21 European divisions to see how often both teams scored at each home line.
The headline is simple. BTTS peaks at 53.5% on a level line and falls to 45.4% when the home side gives 2 goals or more. In between, the decline is gentle rather than dramatic, which matters more than the extremes. If you want the daily selections that come out of this kind of reading, my BTTS tips for today page is where they live.
Q1Does BTTS really drop as the home favourite's handicap grows?
This chart runs from heavy home favourites on the left to home underdogs on the right. The level line sits at the top with 53.5%, built on 9,790 matches and a 95% range of ยฑ1.0 points, so it is a solid reading. Lean the line towards the home side and BTTS slides a little at a time: 52.5% at โ0.25, 52.3% at โ0.5, then 50.6% and 50.9% across the one-goal and one-and-a-half-goal bands.
The real drop arrives at the far left. Once the home side gives 2 goals or more, BTTS falls to 45.4% in 1,650 matches.

| Both teams scored, 67,001 matches; negative line = home favoured | |
|---|---|
| โ2.0 or more | 45.4% |
| โ1.75 / โ1.5 | 50.9% |
| โ1.25 / โ1.0 | 50.6% |
| โ0.75 | 52.3% |
| โ0.5 | 52.3% |
| โ0.25 | 52.5% |
| 0 | 53.5% |
| +0.25 | 53.4% |
| +0.5 | 53.4% |
| +0.75 or more | 52.5% |
What I notice most is the right side of the chart. Home underdogs hold up well, with 53.4% at +0.5 and 52.5% at +0.75 or more. The curve is not symmetrical, and I find that more useful than the peak itself.
Q2Which team actually stops scoring when the line gets big?
BTTS is two separate questions, so I split it. On a level line the home side scored 71.7% of the time and the away side 72.6%, which makes for two roughly equal coin flips. As the home line gets heavier, the home scoring rate climbs to 95.9% and the away rate sinks to 47.3%.
That tells you where the bet lives. With a big home favourite, the home goal is close to given and the whole BTTS outcome depends on the visitors. At that point you are betting on the away side scoring, so price it that way.

|---|---|---|
| โ2.0 or more | 95.9% | 47.3% |
| โ1.75 / โ1.5 | 93.0% | 54.1% |
| โ1.25 / โ1.0 | 87.9% | 57.3% |
| โ0.75 | 84.6% | 61.2% |
| โ0.5 | 79.9% | 64.2% |
| โ0.25 | 76.3% | 67.4% |
| 0 | 71.7% | 72.6% |
| +0.25 | 69.1% | 76.4% |
| +0.5 | 65.8% | 80.1% |
| +0.75 or more | 59.2% | 88.4% |
Home underdogs explain the asymmetry from the first chart. Even at +0.75 or more, the home side still scored 59.2% of the time, while big away underdogs fall well below that. Home sides keep a scoring floor that travelling sides do not.
Q3Do shots on target explain the BTTS drop at big lines?
The shot data lines up neatly with the scoring rates. On a level line the home side averaged 4.1 shots on target and the away side 4.0, which is about as even as football gets. At 2 goals or more, the home side averaged 7.8 against the away side's 2.5, so the favourite was putting around three times as many efforts on target.
When I am weighing a mismatch, this is the gap I want to see broken. Two or three shots on target is a thin supply for a team that needs one goal for my bet to land. That is when I go looking for set-piece threat, a striker in form, or a favourite whose full-backs leave space behind on the turnover.

Q4What are the fair BTTS odds at each Asian handicap line?
Fair odds here are simply one divided by the observed frequency, with no margin. They run from 1.87 for BTTS yes on the level and home-underdog lines up to 2.20 when the home side gives 2 goals or more. At that heaviest band the no side becomes the favourite at 1.83.
Treat these as a baseline model, not a price to trust blindly. The handicap reflects expected goal difference, not the expected total, so two matches on the same line can carry very different goal expectations. The lines are also pre-match, so late moves are not captured. I start from the table and then adjust for the match in front of me.
| Home line | Matches | BTTS | Fair odds yes | Fair odds no |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| โ2.0 or more | 1,650 | 45.4% | 2.20 | 1.83 |
| โ1.75 / โ1.5 | 2,474 | 50.9% | 1.97 | 2.04 |
| โ1.25 / โ1.0 | 6,403 | 50.6% | 1.98 | 2.02 |

| โ0.5 | 9,417 | 52.3% | 1.91 | 2.10 |
| โ0.25 | 14,958 | 52.5% | 1.91 | 2.10 |
| 0 | 9,790 | 53.5% | 1.87 | 2.15 |
| +0.25 | 7,405 | 53.4% | 1.87 | 2.15 |
| +0.5 | 3,219 | 53.4% | 1.87 | 2.15 |
| +0.75 or more | 5,349 | 52.5% | 1.91 | 2.10 |
The playbook
How we would use these numbers before the next BTTS bet.
- Start from the line. Before looking at form, read the home handicap and anchor to its BTTS rate, from 53.5% on a level line down to 45.4% at 2 goals or more. Most of the BTTS value sits in how you adjust from that starting point.
- Back the visitors' attack. When the home side gives 2 goals or more, the home goal arrived 95.9% of the time, so BTTS yes is really a bet on the away side, who scored only 47.3%. Only back it if you have a specific reason the visitors break that pattern.
- Price against fair odds. Compare the offered BTTS yes price with the fair figure for that line, such as 1.87 at level or 1.91 at โ0.5. If the bookmaker's price sits at or below fair after the margin, pass and wait for a better spot.
Data & method
- Data: 21 European divisions, 2016/17โ2025/26, 67,047 matches with full match statistics.
- The Asian handicap line is the home side's pre-match line from a major bookmaker; โ0.30 style codes are treated as quarter lines (โ0.25), โ0.80 as โ0.75 and so on.
- Lines of โ2.0 and beyond, and +0.75 and beyond, are pooled to keep samples above 100.
- BTTS = both teams scored at full time; shots on target are full-match averages.
- Fair odds = 1 / observed frequency, no margin.
- Caveat: The handicap line reflects the expected goal difference, not the expected total; two lines with the same handicap can have very different goal expectations.
- Caveat: Lines are pre-match; late line movements are not captured.
