Corner Lines 8.5 to 12.5: How Often Each Lands in 21 Leagues

I counted how often every main total-corners line landed across 21 divisions. Nine and a half is the real coin flip, and the league you bet in moves the needle more than the tier.

Stat lineCorners

Every corner total I price starts with one plain question: how often does this line actually land? Bookmakers hang their main totals between 8.5 and 12.5. I wanted a proper base rate for each one rather than a gut feel, so I took 67,047 matches from 21 European divisions, 2016/17 to 2025/26, and counted.

The headline is that 9.5 is the genuine coin-flip line. Over landed in 51.7% of matches and Under in 48.3%. Step up one line to 10.5 and Over falls to 40.2%, and the league matters far more than the tier, with Over 10.5 running from 46.3% in the Scottish Championship down to 27.7% in Super League Greece. These are the numbers that sit underneath my corner betting tips before I look at a single team.

Q1Which corner line is closest to a genuine coin flip?

This table is the whole market on one screen. For each line it shows how often Over and Under landed across all 21 divisions, and the fair odds that frequency implies with no bookmaker margin. Fair odds are simply the benchmark. A price has to beat them before a bet makes sense on base rates alone.

Look at how steep the drop is between neighbouring lines. Over 8.5 landed 63.6% of the time, a fair price of 1.57. Over 9.5 sits at 51.7%, fair at 1.94, and Over 10.5 at 40.2%, fair at 2.49. One extra corner moves the probability by more than a tenth each time, which is why I never treat 9.5 and 10.5 as roughly the same bet.

At the top end, Over 11.5 landed in 29.9% of matches (fair 3.35) and Over 12.5 in only 21.3% (fair 4.70). Those are minority outcomes. If a price on Over 12.5 is shorter than its fair mark, the margin is doing the work, not the football.

Q2Which top-flight leagues push corner totals highest and lowest?

The heatmap ranks the 11 top flights by their Over 10.5 rate, and the gradient is clear. The Premier League, Scottish Premiership and Eredivisie sit at the warm end. Super League Greece is cold all the way across, with Over 10.5 at just 27.7%. La Liga and Ligue 1 also sit near the bottom, which fits my sense of leagues where more teams are happy to work the ball centrally rather than flood crosses in early.

Over 9.5 alone ranged from 38.0% to 57.8% across these top flights. In the busiest league, a 9.5 Over is comfortably better than even. In the quietest, it is closer to a two-in-five shot. Pricing every top flight off the overall 51.7% would mislead you in both directions.

Taken together, Over 10.5 landed in 39.9% of 32,747 top-flight matches, almost exactly the overall figure. The average hides the spread, and the spread is where the edge lives.

Q3Do lower divisions produce more corners than top flights?

Less than you might expect. Over 10.5 landed in 40.4% of 34,300 lower-division matches, barely above the top-flight rate. What matters is the country. The Scottish Championship leads all 21 divisions at 46.3% from 1,511 matches, with League One and the Championship close behind. Segunda División and Ligue 2 sit at the bottom, mirroring their top flights.

Over 9.5 in this group ran from 43.0% to 57.6%, a slightly narrower band than the top flights but still wide. The national style seems to travel down the pyramid. A busy English or Scottish feel shows up in the lower tiers too, and so does the calmer French and Spanish rhythm.

The main caveat is that these are league-wide averages from the past seasons in the sample. A single match line also reflects the two teams on the pitch, which this study ignores, and a few Greek seasons plus the National League are missing from the records.

The playbook

How we would use these numbers before the next Corners bet.

  1. Anchor on 9.5 first. In 14 of the 21 divisions, 9.5 was the line closest to 50/50, so start there and only move to 10.5 for the five leagues where that line is the true midpoint.
  2. Price by country, not tier. Top flights and lower divisions landed Over 10.5 at 39.9% and 40.4%, nearly identical, so the league's national style is the variable worth adjusting for.
  3. Respect the fair-odds floor. Over 12.5 never landed above 26.4% in any division, so a price under its overall fair mark of 4.70 needs a strong team-level reason before I would touch it.
Data & method
  • Data: 21 European divisions, 2016/17–2025/26, 67,047 matches with full match statistics.
  • Sample: 67,047 league matches from 21 European divisions, seasons 2016/17 to 2025/26, with corners, shots, fouls and cards all recorded.
  • Total corners = home corners + away corners at full time; Over X.5 means more than X corners.
  • Fair odds = 1 / observed frequency (no bookmaker margin). There are no corner prices in the data, so fair odds are the benchmark a price has to beat.
  • League rows use every match of that division in the sample; the heatmaps are sorted by the Over 10.5 rate.
  • Caveat: Fair odds describe the past ten seasons; a bookmaker line for a single match also reflects the two teams involved, which league averages ignore.
  • Caveat: Greek Super League seasons 2022/23 and 2023/24 and the National League are missing from the statistics records.
